Professor Boyd Swinburn is the Professor of Population Nutrition and Global Health at the University of Auckland. He is also an Honorary Professor at Deakin University in Victoria where he established of the World Health Organisation’s first Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention in 2003. He was co-chair of the International Obesity TaskForce (2009-2014) and World Obesity Policy & Prevention section (2014-2019). He led two Lancet Series on Obesity and co-chaired the Lancet Commission on Obesity which published its landmark report in 2019 on ‘The Global Syndemic of Obesity, Undernutrition and Climate Change.’

He trained as an endocrinologist and has conducted research in metabolic, clinical and public health aspects of obesity. His major research interests are centred on food policy and community actions to prevent obesity, and reduce, what he has coined, the ‘obesogenic’ food environment.

He is currently leading the INFORMAS initiative (www.informas.org) to monitor and benchmark food environments to reduce obesity, diet-related NCDs and their inequalities. Over 80 research groups in over 60 countries are using the INFORMAS protocols for monitoring, research, benchmarking, advocacy and policy impact evaluation.
